The potential for problems come in when we search outside ourselves to improve self esteem rather than looking inside for the true source of esteem.

Perhaps the main way we engage in errant searching is by seeking outside validation.

For example, by attempting to acquire more friends, more money, better relationships and even bustier bodies. Taken to the extreme, cosmetic surgery offers a prime example of outside validation as a way to improve self esteem. Obviously there’s nothing wrong with wanting success or relationships or even a healthier, better-looking body.

But look to your motivation. Are you making a willed choice – from a position of strength – or does it seem a compulsion, or even an obsession? With positive motivation, you’re making an empowered choice. you’re acting out of necessity.
