Page 4 of 4 Next, I decided to test the benefits of this monitor using 3D modelling applications, the first being 3DS Max. The first thing I noticed is that the field of view does not change, it simply stretches it as in Battlefield 2142. It does however afford you the ability to render the final product in the same aspect ratio as your view, because it’s stretched to the appropriate size in the viewport. The overall size of the monitor also is a benefit if you are modelling something that you have on your desk, as you can place it between you and the monitor, allowing you to have the right viewing angle on the object. Overall, there isn’t a massive benefit to using 3DS Max with a widescreen display. I am currently working on the first beta map for our very own HL2 Tekbunker mod, in valve's Source SDK. Using the Hammer map editor is now an absolute pleasure, allowing me to have the map and* 2 small pictures of the graphics card I am mapping open without having to switch between the two constantly. This makes the overall process much smoother, giving me the chance to constantly check to see if the dimensions are roughly accurate at a glance. I can remember years ago, mapping with the original HL "Worldcraft" map editor, cursing my screen resolution because I couldn’t do that. Again as in 3DS Max, the overall size is a benefit because I can actually have the part I am modelling out on the desk in between me and the monitor. Also, when compiling the map, I can expand the console window so I can see the full paths of everything, as well as full error descriptions, without the need for a scroll bar. (Only a minor benefit but is nice all the same) All in all, this monitor has made mapping with hammer a bit easier, and although is not a massive difference, still preferable over a CRT. Conclusion The price, combined with the overall performance of this display makes it an instant winner. I’ve saved a lot of desk space, as well as increased my desktop space. I would have preferred to have a DVI cable in the box, instead of getting the poor speakers that came built in, although I can understand why they are there (Would be perfect for an office based computer). In the specifications for this monitor it says its wall mountable, however on further investigation I have found that it requires a separate wall-mounting kit that attaches to the back of the panel via 4 screws. This is not mentioned when buying the display. This may be down to the supplier, so always double check if this is important to you. Playing games and watching films on my PC is now an extremely comfortable experience, making me want to watch them on my PC rather than on the TV. Sometimes it’s a bit of a hassle finding which settings to pick in some applications, but in the end it’s never more than a couple of clicks away. I would recommend this monitor to anyone, as an all round star performer. Pros: - Takes up almost no room,
- Is extremely responsive (5ms)
- Makes games visually more appealing
- A lot less chance of eye strain.
- Gives you a bigger desktop area
- Very pleasing to the eye
- Makes watching movies awesome
Cons: - No DVI cable
- Poor Speakers
I have had a lot joy out of this monitor, and have decided to give a brand new one away in our Christmas competition. That’s right - you have the chance to win a brand new one, shipped right to your door. The rules are - to participate you have to have 20 (NON SPAM) posts. That’s it! There is a competition thread HERE. Forum Discussion Author Jarhead Editor Admin
