As a hardened PC nut, I have always said a firm no. But all this new Cell technology has me thinking of the endless possibilities. It seems that the age old snobbery of the (IBM) Personal Computer has finally had its day, and at the hands of - IBM.
Did they know? They have released tonnes of old patents, possibly no longer needed, as they deemed them out dated! What's next? Is Cell technology just the start? I suppose a long hard look at the patents released, might give some indication as to "What they are up to!"
Well, it can only be a good thing, and I cant wait for the first Core Cell PC based hardware. For the first time, you can have a truly Sci-Fi computer system. Taking resources from other areas (other computers or even toasters, as written by PC STATS). Imagine a motherboard with 4 CPU's on it, acting as one! SLi would go through the roof, GPUs might have a Cell CPU onboard too. every component could have such a chip on board. Though I was thinking, what about the patent? are IBM, and Sony ushering in a new era? Or are they going to money spin this idea, and have it solely for the IBM/Sony products? What would you do?
It is not unusual to see the next era of something, slowed up by the "Board of Directors" and in the end, another company brings out a better or newer/different idea. So all good for the consumer? Yes. But for the meantime, its all happening in a Play Station 3! Makes me wonder if my next PC will be on par with the next generation of consoles. If they can put 2 Play Stations together, and make a mega Play Station, or worse, a console that can benchmark better than a PC, well, that could spell the end of an era. Makes me wonder how they benchmark anyway. I will be worried, if they do release things like that as technology demonstrations. To me, it does look like the starts of a console revolution. No more the throw away parts of a PC, but cutting edge technology that makes all industries jealous, and worried. NVIDIA and ATI could have their work cut out in 2 years, and not because they each have new and better products to compete with, but because no one is buying Personal Computers for gaming, or indeed, by that point, internet and community based sites, could be available on consoles, bringing a steep decline in PC sales. I think consoles are taking a new step, and are being taken really seriously now. They have come a long way sonce the first few, and now they look set to evolve even further. This is why I beg the question, "Are consoles overtaking PCs?" Forum Discussion
